CHAPTER THREE

RICK

Date day is not going according to my plan. I have just one job today, but my truck is giving me issues, so I must take it by a mechanic.

And that is when my buddy Sergio buzzes me that he has a huge workload that he needs me to help him with.

So, he comes to pick me up and we drive to the other side of town where a couple of neighboring houses have the same issue. The job is taking longer than I expected.

“Hey, man.” Sergio asks “You keep checking that watch. Do you have a dentist’s appointment?”

“Ha ha ha, very funny,” I respond dryly to his joke. Sergio is my good friend and we have always had each other’s back. And he does love to joke around, but he still is a loyal friend.

“Really, man. What’s up?”

I sigh as I try to turn a knob with a pair of pliers. We are in a flooded basement and still have not gotten to the source of the plumbing issue for both houses. “Nothing, Serge.”

“Come on, old guy. Spill it out. What’s wrong?”

I shrug lightly. “Well, if you must know, I have a date tonight.”

Sergio whistles dramatically. “Didn’t tell me you are finally getting out there again. I never thought you would. And who is this woman that has got you tied up in knots? I have never seen you this worked up about meeting a woman before.”

“I am not worked up,” I correct him. “I just don’t want to get there late and keep her waiting. It’s not the polite thing to do.”

“Hmm. So, tell me about this woman. Do I know her?”

“Probably not. She is new to town. Beautiful, great body, smart . . . a bit younger, though, but it doesn’t matter.”

“With all those features, I would say you definitely got yourself a worthy treat.”

“Shut up, Sergio. You have a wife and kids,” I accuse.

“Does not mean that I have gone blind overnight. I am still able to appreciate art when I see it.”

“Just stuff it, old guy.” I finally get the knob to move and start to replace the bars. “Should have this done in an hour or so. Then you can drop me at the mechanic so I can pick up my truck, get home, take a shower and get ready for my date.”

“You should let her know you might be later, though. This place is like an hour’s drive to the mechanic’s, you know.”

“Oh, yeah. That makes sense. Let me go call her right now.” I pull out my phone to make the call but a picture of Isabella’s disappointed face flashes through my mind and I groan loudly. “No, I don’t want to do that.”

“What?”

“I don’t want to call and postpone. She might read another meaning into it and that would ruin the whole night I have planned. Look, Serge. I believe we can do this in record time, and I can make it in time for my date.”

“Looks like you have been bitten by the love bug,” Sergio teases with wiggling brows.
